History and Timeline:
1840s Construction: Wealthy cotton and shipping merchant Godfrey Barnsley built the Italianate-style estate named "Woodlands" for his wife, Julia. Julia died of a lung ailment in 1845 before the mansion was completed.
The Legend: According to local lore, Julia's ghost appeared to Godfrey in the boxwood gardens and urged him to finish the grand home for their children. He finished construction by 1848.
Civil War Damage: During the Civil War, the estate sat directly in the path of General Sherman's March to the Sea and suffered damage from occupying Union troops.
Tornado & Decline: A destructive tornado tore the roof off the main house in 1906. Unable to afford repairs, the family lived in outbuildings or parts of the estate until it was auctioned off in 1942. The roofless manor fell into heavy ruin and remained abandoned for decades.
Tragedy in 1935: A violent family dispute occurred on the grounds when descendants fought over the failing estate, ending in a fatal shooting.
Restoration and Rebirth: Prince Hubertus Fugger of Bavaria purchased the property in 1988, stabilized the historic Italianate ruins, and restored the original 1840s Downing-style parterre gardens. It opened as a public garden and museum in 1991, and later expanded into a luxury resort.
